AMSTERDAM AND NETHERLANDS TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS

Amsterdam and the Netherlands as a whole is well served by public transport and amenities and carries few security concerns, but as ever, it is wise to be prepared when travelling:

  • Familiarise yourself with your destination - the layout of the city and important routes
  • Always carry a charged phone programmed with useful numbers - your hotel, local colleagues, police, or embassy - and the International SOS Assistance app
  • Don't give out personal information and don't discuss your travel plans with strangers
  • If walking in public, carry small denominations of currency. Keep larger denominations (notes) and cards in a money belt
  • If you suspect that you are being followed, enter any busy public place and call local authorities for help
  • Travellers should be alert to suspicious packages or behaviour and report all related activity to local authorities

TRAVEL RISK

The Netherlands is a stable and highly developed democracy and business travellers will face few security concerns. However, pickpocketing and bag-snatching can be a problem in the larger cities, especially Amsterdam, particularly in central and tourist-frequented areas and at Schiphol Airport (AMS) and Rotterdam (South Holland province).

Travellers should also be cautious of thieves on bicycles and mopeds.

Organised criminal activity is more likely to focus on fixed business interests, not personnel, and is unlikely to pose a direct threat to business travellers or expatriates.

Consult the International SOS Travel Risk Map for more information.

PERSONAL RISK

A degree of caution should be exercised in larger cities after dark and travellers are advised to take standard security precautions against petty crime.

Drink spiking is also a concern, especially for female or lone travellers in large urban centres.

Visitors should also be aware that criminals posing as police officers sometimes target tourists and ask to see passports and credit cards before stealing them. Personnel should always ask to see valid identification before surrendering personal documents.

Violent crime is rare, though instances are sometimes reported, mainly in Amsterdam or Rotterdam. Police statistics indicate that reports of discrimination – including verbal and physical assaults – against members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community (LGBT) have increased in recent years, with Amsterdam reported to be particularly affected.

Visit the International SOS website for more information on health and security solutions.

  • "It was the first time for me to attend FEM Amsterdam event, which I definitely enjoyed. I got a challenge within my organization to revise the full process of global mobility with the aim to bring it to a strategic level. The content presented at the conference gave me a lot of useful insights and ideas for further implementation at my company. Thank you."
